BUSINESS IN THE NEWS Today in the News BUSINESS TOP STORIES STORIES OF THE DAY – March 1, 2019 TENSIONS OVER THE RUSSIA-U.S. DEAL ON HOSTILE RUSSIAN Tensions have flared in Washington after a Russian-American businessman and his business partner were killed in a car accident in Georgia, sparking a new round of tensions in the region.
But the businessman’s death has also sparked renewed calls for U.S.-Russian relations to return to normal, with a group of U.N. diplomats calling for an immediate cease-fire in Georgia.
The incident took place just hours after President Donald Trump and his wife Melania visited the country.
The White House said Trump’s visit was a chance to “show support for our troops and their families and to thank all of our NATO allies for their continued support.”
Trump’s spokeswoman, Hope Hicks, also said on Monday that the president did not want to talk about the incident until the investigation was complete.
The Georgia state health ministry said the car accident killed the Russian-born businessman and businessman’s wife and two children.
The cause of the crash is not yet known.
A group of Ukrainian diplomats and Russian diplomats, including the Russian ambassador, met on Monday to discuss the incident and its potential impact on the U.K.-Russia relationship.
It was not immediately clear whether any discussions have taken place on how to move forward with the cease-fires.
